Naturally Natives

What Are Native Plants?

Black IronwoodNative plants are trees, shrubs, and wildflowers that thrived in an area prior to European settlement.  These plants have evolved over a millennium to be ideally suited to that ecosystem in terms of soil type, climate, wildlife food and habitat.

In other words, native Florida plants can survive Florida's wet and humid summers,
dry winters and everything in between with minimal maintenance once established.

Planting native plants on your property helps preserve Florida's natural habitat.  This is important now more than ever as Florida's incredibly diverse, wild ecosystems are replaced with homogenized landscapes of non-native exotic plants.

Where do I find native plants
for my yard?

While, on occasion, you can find some native plants at your local retail nursery, you have to know what your are looking for and not be distracted by the large variety of non-native plants they offer.

We recommend that you visit a truly native nursery that sells to retail customers.  Below are some of our favorites below, but for a complete list of native nurseries in the state of Florida, visit the Association of Florida Native Nurseries web site.
